This Week In Doctor Who has always had a worldwide focus (to the
best of my abilities). But I've been wanting what's happening this
week to happen since long before this column began in 1998, so bear
with me. :) Also, there may be a fair number of people reading the
column for the first time this week (hello!) depending on how well
SciFi advertised Doctor Who's return.
2 ½ years after news of a new Doctor Who series came out, almost a year after it premiered in the UK, and 8 ½ months after the New Zealand premiere, the new Doctor Who has finally reached the US. March 17th at 9PM Eastern, the first 2 episodes air on the SciFi Channel http://www.scifi.com as part of their long-established Sci- Fi Friday programming lineup. Episodes will air in their original 16:9 aspect ratio in a letterbox (there is currently no widescreen version of the SciFi Channel). Their website http://www.scifi.com now has a preview for the series online titled Doctor Who: Behind The Scenes - at the moment it is clickable through SciFi's front page.
Christopher Eccleston is the Doctor in this 13 episode series.
Billie Piper plays Rose Tyler, who becomes his companion. There is a
story arc, but the episodes are standalone (there are 3 2 parters
and 7 single episodes during the run). If you didn't get a friend to
send you a copy from a country where it's been broadcast, or you
didn't buy the DVDs from overseas to play on a multi-region DVD
player, or you didn't buy the DVDs from Canada, and you haven't seen
these episodes yet - you are probably in for a very good time. Try
not to read too much about the storylines in advance. If you have
seen them before, tune in again for a rewatch (the future of the
show on US TV depends on the ratings it gets). If you don't have
cable/satellite or SciFi's been moved to a package you don't have,
you can still import the DVDs from Canada or overseas or wait for
the US release of Series One on July 4, 2006.
Due to the show's success in the UK last year, the BBC renewed it
for 2 additional 13 episode series (2006 and 2007) and 2 extended
Christmas episodes (2005 and 2006). SciFi has an option to buy the
2005 Christmas episode and the 2006 Series, but is not obligated to
buy them. Doctor Who has also spawned a spinoff show
called "Torchwood" which will be filmed later this year - presumably
SciFi and other networks will look at that show once it's been made.
Regular broadcast times are Fridays at 9PM & Midnight EST East
Feed/PST West Feed and Sundays at 11PM EST East Feed/PST West Feed.
With 2 episodes airing on premiere night the schedule on the 17th
will be off - Rose at 9 and 11PM, The End Of The World at 10PM and
Midnight. The Sunday repeat time will be fluid until April 2 due to
special programming. And the first few episodes will have extra
repeats - see the listings section below for the full broadcast info.
Figuring out when Doctor Who airs in your Time Zone.
1) Do you have satellite? If so, you are on the East Coast Feed.
2) If you live in the Eastern and Central Time Zones and have cable,
you are probably on the East Coast Feed. In other Time Zones, you
are probably on the West Coast Feed. If you are at all uncertain,
check SciFi's online schedule against your print TV listings before
Doctor Who airs so you know which time it will air.
9PM EST/PST Friday translates to:
Time Zone East Feed West Feed
EST/EDT 9PM 12AM
CST/CDT 8PM 11PM
MST/MDT 7PM 10PM
PST/PDT 6PM 9PM
Alaska 5PM 8PM
Hawaii 4PM** 7PM**
**Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time. As of 2 April, all
times on Sci-Fi will be 1 hour earlier in Hawaii.
Iowa Public TV's http://www.iptv.org pledge drive for Doctor Who on March 11 was a success. They will continue airing 2 episodes a week through at least March 2007. Initial reports were that William Hartnell won the pledge voting poll, in which case his stories would replace Sylvester McCoy on April 8. However, the station is still taking pledges/votes till Festival 2006 ends later this month, and results could change.
Outpost Gallifrey http://www.gallifreyone.com reports that there
will be a press launch in Cardiff, Wales on 28 March for Series 2 of
Doctor Who, where the premiere date in the UK should be unveiled and
the advertising for the show gets underway in earnest. The
speculation in recent weeks is that Doctor Who will *probably* begin
its Second series in Mid-April, though if it is like last year the
BBC will not make a commitment until the last minute. The "Totally
Doctor Who" kids programme is expected to air on the Fridays before
new episodes and "Doctor Who Confidential" will air on BBC Three
after new Who episodes premiere - the start dates for those tie-in
shows will depend on the date for the main programme.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.

An archaeological dig goes awry, leaving a village at the mercy of a demonic force and the Master. This story is available in colour. UKTV Gold aired it in colour in the mid 1990s and the last time they aired it. Several times in the late 1990s and early 2000s they aired it in black & white, with only episode 5 in colour. Hopefully they will air the right version.
